Delaware vs. Valley
(Interstat) — In a high-octane G League contest defined by offensive firepower and a crucial third-quarter response, the Delaware Blue Coats outlasted the Valley Suns 124-115 on Friday night at Mullett Arena.
The game lived up to its projected scoring but defied other pregame expectations, as Delaware, entering with an 11-18 record, secured a road victory against a Valley team that statistical models heavily favored at home.
The opening frame set a frantic pace, with the teams combining for 68 points. Delaware established an early rhythm, led by MarJon Beauchamp’s active play and Johni Broome’s perimeter shooting, to take a 38-30 lead. The Blue Coats extended their advantage in the second quarter, leveraging Valley turnovers and efficient bench production from DeAndre Williams and Saint Thomas to build a 68-53 halftime cushion.
The most important segment of the game arrived in the third quarter, when Valley mounted a serious challenge. The Suns, led by the playmaking of JaQuori McLaughlin and the inside presence of C.J. Huntley, erupted for 37 points. A 17-4 run, capped by a Sean McDermott three-pointer, brought Valley to within a single possession at 83-79, threatening to completely erase Delaware’s substantial lead.
Facing a momentum shift that could have undone their strong first half, the Blue Coats demonstrated critical composure. Charles Bassey became the stabilizing force, scoring on consecutive possessions inside to halt the Valley surge. Then, after a Koby Brea three-pointer for Valley, Delaware closed the quarter on a 7-2 mini-run, with Saint Thomas converting a driving shot and a free throw to push the lead back to nine points entering the final period. This response to Valley’s best punch proved decisive.
Delaware managed the fourth quarter effectively, never allowing the Suns to get closer than five points. The Blue Coats consistently answered Valley scores, often through Bassey in the paint or timely three-pointers, including one from Beauchamp. Valley’s R.J. Nembhard and McDermott continued to score in the closing minutes, but Delaware’s offense, which saw six players score in double figures according to the flow of the play descriptions, had too many weapons and secured the nine-point win.
The victory improved Delaware’s record to 12-18 across all competitions, while Valley fell to 8-23. The teams are scheduled for a quick rematch at the same venue on Sunday.
Key performances underpinned the result. For Delaware, Charles Bassey provided a major interior presence with multiple put-backs, blocks, and key baskets during the third-quarter stand. MarJon Beauchamp filled the stat sheet with scoring, assists, and rebounds, while Kennedy Chandler’s playmaking and backcourt pressure were consistent themes. For Valley, R.J. Nembhard orchestrated the offense with a series of assists and scoring drives, JaQuori McLaughlin hit big shots, and Sean McDermott stretched the floor with his three-point shooting.
The game was a showcase of the G League’s offensive nature, but ultimately turned on Delaware’s ability to withstand a formidable Valley rally in the third quarter and execute down the stretch to close out the victory.
