Salt Lake City vs. South Bay
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (Interstat) — R.J. Davis recorded a triple-double with 30 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, and the South Bay Lakers outlasted the Salt Lake City Stars 125-118 in a high-octane G League contest on Thursday night at the UCLA Health Training Center.
The game turned decisively in the final 30 seconds. With the score tied at 118, Davis, the orchestrator of the Lakers’ offense all night, delivered the dagger. Isolated beyond the arc, he hit a deep 3-pointer with 29 seconds remaining to put South Bay ahead for good.
Salt Lake City, which got a game-high 29 points from Sean East, failed to answer on its ensuing possession. The Lakers then sealed the victory at the free-throw line, with Kobe Bufkin making two and Anton Watson adding two more in the closing seconds.
The contest was a back-and-forth affair defined by offensive efficiency and critical mistakes. South Bay scored 125 points on 101 possessions, while Salt Lake City managed 118 on 102 trips. The difference came in ball security; the Lakers committed only eight turnovers, capitalizing on 16 by the Stars to score 22 points off those miscues.
Davis was the catalyst, controlling the tempo and finding teammates for easy scores. His performance marked a continuation of strong play, following a 21-point, six-assist outing just two days prior. He was supported by Watson, who had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Bufkin, who added 25 points.
For Salt Lake City, offensive firepower was not in short supply. East was dynamic, and Max Abmas contributed 27 points. Oscar Tshiebwe posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. However, the Stars’ offense, which shot just 46.6% from the field, often stalled against a active Lakers defense that recorded 10 steals and seven blocks.
South Bay established an early lead, closing the first quarter up 26-22 and extending it to 60-55 by halftime. The Lakers maintained a slim margin through the third, leading 93-87, but Salt Lake City mounted a persistent challenge in the fourth. The Stars tied the game multiple times in the final period, setting the stage for Davis’ late-game heroics.
With the win, South Bay improved its season record to 15-13. The Lakers have now won three of their last four games. Salt Lake City, which had won four of its last five entering the night, fell to 19-12.
The two teams will meet again in a quick rematch at the same venue on Saturday.
