Grand Rapids vs. Maine

PORTLAND, Maine (Interstat) — In a game defined by wild momentum swings and a dramatic finish, the Grand Rapids Gold edged the Maine Celtics 122-119 in overtime Thursday night in a G League contest at the Portland Exposition Building.

The most critical sequence unfolded in the final seconds of regulation and the opening moments of overtime. Trailing 114-111 with 3 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Grand Rapids’ Dane Goodwin hit a 23-foot 3-pointer off an assist from Javante McCoy to tie the game and force the extra period.

The Gold then seized immediate control in overtime. Goodwin, who finished with 25 points and 12 rebounds, hit two more 3-pointers in the first 22 seconds of the extra frame to give Grand Rapids a six-point cushion it would not relinquish. Maine managed only a Max Shulga 3-pointer and a Jalen Bridges putback dunk in overtime, scoring just five points as the Gold held on for the road victory.

The game was a tale of contrasting halves. Grand Rapids led 27-24 after a back-and-forth first quarter, but the second quarter belonged entirely to Maine. The Celtics erupted for 45 points in the period, fueled by Ron Harper’s 37-point performance, to take a 69-52 lead into halftime.

The Gold methodically chipped away in the second half, winning the third quarter 25-22 and then exploding for 37 points in the fourth quarter to set up the late-game heroics. Grand Rapids’ 37-point fourth quarter outpaced Maine’s 23-point effort in the period.

Beyond Goodwin’s clutch shooting, Grand Rapids featured a balanced offensive attack. Javante McCoy also scored 25 points and dished out eight assists. Moses Brown added 18 points and nine rebounds, while Curtis Jones and Kessler Edwards each contributed 16 points. Edwards completed a double-double with 11 rebounds.

For Maine, Harper’s game-high 37 points led the way. Aaron Scott and Jalen Bridges each scored 16 points, with Bridges adding nine rebounds. Kendall Brown finished with 15 points.

The win improved Grand Rapids to 16-13 on the season, snapping a three-game losing streak. Maine fell to 18-12 with the loss. The outcome defied the pregame statistical projections, which heavily favored the Celtics at home.

Grand Rapids next plays at Long Island on Monday. Maine will host Westchester on Saturday.
