Sioux Falls vs. Birmingham
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) — The Birmingham Squadron, propelled by a dominant first half and a standout performance from Trey Alexander, snapped a five-game losing streak with a decisive 115-97 victory over the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the G League on Wednesday night at Legacy Arena.
Despite entering the game with a league-worst record and facing a Skyforce team that statistical models heavily favored, the Squadron seized control early and never relented. The most important phase of the game was the first quarter, where Birmingham established a tone of offensive efficiency and defensive resistance that Sioux Falls could never overcome.
The Squadron erupted for 32 points in the opening period, led by Alexander’s quick 11 points. Birmingham’s ball movement and shot-making created an immediate gap, while their defense forced the Skyforce into difficult attempts and six early turnovers. Although Sioux Falls guard Jahmir Young kept his team within striking distance with 10 first-quarter points, the Skyforce found themselves in a nine-point hole after just 12 minutes.
That early deficit proved insurmountable. Birmingham extended its lead in the second quarter, outscoring Sioux Falls 36-31 to take a 68-54 advantage into halftime. The Squadron’s offensive rating of 116.0 for the game, compared to Sioux Falls’ 96.4, underscored the disparity in execution. Birmingham shot 45.6% from the field and connected on 15 three-pointers, while the Skyforce managed just 39.3% shooting and hit only 10 of 37 from beyond the arc.
Alexander, the game’s top star, finished with 31 points, five rebounds and six assists in 35 minutes, continuing a run of high-level performances. He was complemented by a near triple-double from point guard D.J. Carton, who had 26 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Center Hunter Dickinson, from Alexandria, Virginia, added a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, and his presence inside contributed to Birmingham’s 10 blocked shots, doubling Sioux Falls’ total.
For Sioux Falls, Young led the way with 25 points and seven assists in just 16 minutes of play. Dennis Smith added 18 points, and Steve Settle of Glenarden, Maryland, posted 12 points and nine rebounds. The Skyforce’s offense, however, was inconsistent throughout, scoring only 16 points in the final quarter as the Squadron closed out the win.
The victory improved Birmingham’s record to 10-22 across all competitions, while Sioux Falls fell to 17-13. The Squadron’s next game is Friday at Noblesville. The Skyforce travel to face Texas on Saturday.
