Cleveland vs. Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) — The Cleveland Charge used a dominant third-quarter surge to pull away from the Birmingham Squadron and secure a 120-105 victory in a G League game Saturday night at Legacy Arena.

The win improved Cleveland’s record to 16-10 across all competitions this season, while Birmingham fell to 9-22.

The game was closely contested through the first half, with Birmingham holding a narrow 56-55 lead at halftime. The Squadron’s Trey Alexander and Hunter Dickinson provided early offense, combining for efficient scoring inside. Cleveland kept pace behind balanced efforts, but struggled at times with turnovers.

The most important part of the game unfolded decisively in the third quarter. The Charge erupted for 39 points, overwhelming Birmingham with a 25-7 run over a six-minute span that turned a two-point deficit into a commanding 16-point lead. The run was fueled by stifling defense and explosive offense. Cleveland forced five Birmingham turnovers during the stretch, converting them into easy transition opportunities.

Point guard Darius Brown was the catalyst, dishing out multiple assists during the run, including a setup for a Killian Hayes 3-pointer. Hayes and Tristan Enaruna also hit key shots from beyond the arc as the Charge’s ball movement and pace proved too much for the Squadron. Birmingham’s offense, which had been efficient in the first half, stalled against Cleveland’s increased defensive pressure, managing only 27 points in the quarter.

Cleveland maintained control throughout the fourth quarter, with Birmingham never cutting the deficit below double digits in the final period.

Brown orchestrated the Charge offense masterfully, finishing with 20 points and 13 assists. Norchad Omier, the top star for Cleveland, recorded a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds, controlling the paint on both ends. Enaruna led all scorers with 23 points, and Hayes added 20 points and eight assists.

For Birmingham, Alexander led the way with 25 points and six assists. D.J. Carton scored 20 points, and Dickinson finished with 15 points, four assists and four blocks.

Statistically, Cleveland’s victory was built on volume and extra chances. Despite shooting a lower percentage from the field (47.8%) than Birmingham (55.1%), the Charge attempted 14 more field goals, aided by 18 offensive rebounds. Cleveland also forced 19 Birmingham turnovers, converting them into 11 steals. The Charge hit 16 3-pointers to Birmingham’s seven, a 27-point disparity from long range.

Interstat’s ELO system had projected Cleveland with a 78.50 percent probability to win.

The teams had just met two days prior, with Cleveland also winning, 113-104. The Charge will next host the Memphis Hustle on Jan. 30. The Squadron are scheduled to host the Sioux Falls Skyforce on Jan. 28.
