South Bay vs. Rio Grande Valley

EDINBURG, Texas (Interstat) — In a high-octane G League showdown defined by runs and resilience, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers outlasted the South Bay Lakers 126-119 on Tuesday night at Bert Ogden Arena. The victory gave the Vipers a sweep of a two-game home set against the Lakers, having also won 126-121 just three days prior.

The game’s pivotal sequence arrived late in the fourth quarter with the outcome still in doubt. After South Bay’s Augustas Marciulionis hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 116 with just over two minutes remaining, the Vipers’ defense and composure took over. South Bay guard R.J. Davis committed a critical lost ball turnover, stolen by Rio Grande Valley’s Daishen Nix, who converted the fast-break layup to put the Vipers ahead 119-116 with 1:03 left.

The Lakers, who had fought back from a 10-point deficit earlier in the period, then saw their chances further diminish. Following a missed free throw by Marciulionis, the Vipers’ Isaiah Crawford scored on a driving layup with 43 seconds left to extend the lead to five. South Bay’s ensuing possession ended with Davis missing a short floating jumper, and the Vipers closed the game at the free-throw line, making five of their final six attempts to seal the victory.

The contest was an offensive showcase throughout. South Bay built an early lead, ending the first quarter up 31-28 behind efficient play from Chris Manon and Anton Watson. The Vipers responded with a dominant 34-point second quarter, fueled by Cameron Matthews and Tristen Newton, to take a 62-61 halftime advantage.

Both teams continued their torrid scoring pace after the break. The third quarter was a 36-36 draw, featuring a flurry of 3-pointers from South Bay’s Arthur Kaluma and Rio Grande Valley’s Newton. The Vipers managed to create their first significant separation early in the fourth, using a 10-2 run to open a 104-96 lead before the Lakers mounted their final, ultimately futile, comeback attempt.

Rio Grande Valley improved to 14-12 with the win, while South Bay fell to an even 12-12 on the season. The Vipers next host the Rip City Remix on Thursday, while the Lakers return home to face Mexico City on the same night.

The most important part of the game was the final two-minute stretch following the 116-116 tie. With the game on the line, Rio Grande Valley executed defensively, forcing a key turnover from South Bay’s primary ball-handler, R.J. Davis, and converting it into immediate points. This play, a steal and score by Daishen Nix, shifted momentum permanently in the Vipers’ favor. South Bay’s subsequent missed free throws and a failed attempt to score in the paint allowed Rio Grande Valley to ice the game from the foul line, demonstrating a decisive edge in clutch-time execution after a night where neither team could sustain a defensive grip.
