Greensboro vs. Birmingham
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) — In a game defined by dramatic momentum swings and a frantic final minute, the Greensboro Swarm edged the Birmingham Squadron 116-114 in a G League contest Monday afternoon at Legacy Arena.
The Swarm, the league’s visiting team, built a substantial early lead, saw it vanish in a second-half surge by the Squadron, and ultimately made the necessary plays in the closing seconds to secure their fourth consecutive victory.
Greensboro established control from the opening tip, leveraging hot outside shooting to build a double-digit lead in the first quarter. Antonio Reeves was instrumental in the early barrage, connecting on multiple three-pointers as the Swarm poured in 35 points in the period. They maintained their offensive efficiency to take a 63-48 advantage into halftime, having led by as many as 18 points.
The second half saw a complete reversal. The Squadron, led by the interior presence of center Hunter Dickinson and the backcourt play of Trey Alexander and Jaden Springer, mounted a relentless comeback. Birmingham outscored Greensboro 31-30 in the third quarter and then unleashed a 35-point fourth quarter. Dickinson, the 7-foot-1 center from Alexandria, Virginia, became a focal point, scoring from the perimeter and in the post while also facilitating for teammates.
The Squadron’s push culminated in a tie game late in the fourth quarter. With just over 35 seconds remaining, Dickinson hit a 27-foot three-pointer to even the score at 114-114, capping a massive Birmingham rally and setting the stage for a decisive final possession.
The most critical sequence of the game followed. After a Greensboro timeout, the Swarm worked the clock down. Keyontae Johnson, who had a pivotal all-around performance, lost the ball on a drive, but it was stolen by Birmingham’s Johnny O’Neil with 13 seconds left, giving the Squadron a chance to win. Birmingham advanced the ball and set up a play for Springer, but his 25-foot three-point attempt for the win missed with three seconds remaining.
Greensboro’s Ibou Badji secured the crucial defensive rebound and was fouled. He made both free throws with 1.4 seconds left to provide the final margin. Birmingham’s desperation heave was off target, sealing the Swarm victory.
The win improved Greensboro’s record to 19-7, solidifying their position among the league’s top teams. The loss was a tough one for Birmingham, which fell to 9-20 despite a valiant effort, particularly in the second half.
The game’s key performers reflected the back-and-forth nature of the contest. For Birmingham, Hunter Dickinson’s scoring and playmaking fueled the comeback, while Trey Alexander orchestrated the offense and Jaden Springer provided scoring bursts. For Greensboro, Liam McNeeley’s efficient scoring and Antonio Reeves’ early shooting set the tone, but it was the late-game composure and key plays from Keyontae Johnson and the defensive work of Ibou Badji that ultimately preserved the win.
Greensboro next travels to face the Maine Celtics on Friday. Birmingham will host the Cleveland Charge on Thursday.
