San Diego vs. South Bay
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (Interstat) — In a frantic finish befitting their recent history, the South Bay Lakers edged the San Diego Clippers 120-115 in a G League contest Wednesday night at the UCLA Health Training Center.
The game, a back-and-forth affair featuring 18 lead changes and 13 ties, was ultimately decided at the free-throw line in the final 10 seconds. With the score tied at 115, San Diego’s John Poulakidas fouled South Bay’s Arthur Kaluma, who calmly sank both free throws to put the Lakers ahead for good with one minute remaining.
San Diego had multiple chances to tie or take the lead on the ensuing possession, but Zach Freemantle missed a floating jump shot and a follow-up attempt before being fouled on another offensive rebound. Freemantle made the first free throw to cut the deficit to one but missed the second. Patrick Baldwin Jr. grabbed the offensive board but missed a tip-in, and Kaluma secured the defensive rebound.
After a missed 3-pointer by South Bay’s R.J. Davis, San Diego’s Jahmyl Telfort committed a loose ball foul, sending Drew Timme to the line. Timme made both free throws to extend the lead to 119-115 with 10 seconds left. Following a San Diego timeout, Matt Allocco fouled Davis, who split his pair at the line. Baldwin was then fouled on a desperation 3-point attempt with two seconds left. He missed the first and made the second, but the intentional miss on the third attempt was recovered by South Bay to seal the victory.
The game’s pivotal sequence capped a contest defined by significant momentum swings. South Bay raced to an early double-digit lead, powered by a 36-point first quarter. The Lakers led by as many as 17 in the second quarter before San Diego mounted a massive rally. The Clippers outscored South Bay 36-20 in the third quarter, erasing the deficit and taking a brief lead, setting the stage for the tense fourth-quarter finish.
Drew Timme led South Bay with a dominant all-around performance, facilitating the offense early and scoring key baskets late. His effort was complemented by the backcourt scoring of R.J. Davis and timely contributions from Arthur Kaluma and Luke Goode.
For San Diego, Patrick Baldwin Jr. and Zach Freemantle provided consistent scoring, while John Poulakidas and Jahmyl Telfort hit crucial shots during the comeback. The Clippers’ bench, however, was outscored by their Lakers counterparts.
With the win, South Bay improved its season record to 12 wins and 10 losses, while San Diego fell to 13-11. The Lakers have now won two of the three meetings between the teams this season.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, South Bay was projected with a 73 percent probability to win.
South Bay travels to face the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Saturday, while San Diego returns home to host the Windy City Bulls on Thursday.
