Iowa vs. Valley

TEMPE, Ariz. (Interstat) — In a G League shootout that defied pregame projections, the Iowa Wolves outlasted the Valley Suns 130-123 on Tuesday night at Mullett Arena in a game defined by a staggering third-quarter offensive explosion from the visitors.

The Wolves, who improved to 14-10, entered the second half with a 58-57 lead after a back-and-forth first half that saw 11 lead changes. What followed was a historic period of offensive efficiency. Iowa erupted for 46 points in the third quarter, turning a one-point advantage into a commanding 104-84 lead heading into the final 12 minutes. The Wolves shot a blistering 68% from the field in the quarter, connecting on 6 of 9 attempts from 3-point range and committing just one turnover.

The pivotal run was a collective effort. Alize Johnson, the 6-foot-9 small forward from Williamsport, Pennsylvania, was instrumental throughout, facilitating the offense and hitting key shots. Center Rocco Zikarsky of Sunshine Coast, Australia, stretched the floor with two third-quarter 3-pointers, while Jules Bernard and Enrique Freeman provided consistent scoring. The Wolves’ ball movement was precise, leading to a series of open looks that they relentlessly converted.

Valley, which fell to 6-16, refused to capitulate. The Suns mounted a furious fourth-quarter rally, outscoring Iowa 39-26 behind a relentless attack led by point guard Damion Baugh. Baugh repeatedly attacked the basket and hit from outside, fueling a comeback that brought the Suns within single digits in the final minutes. His backcourt mate, Jaden Shackelford, also caught fire from deep during the surge.

The Suns’ pressure forced several late Iowa turnovers, cutting the deficit to 120-118 with 46 seconds remaining after a Baugh 3-pointer. The Wolves, however, sealed the game at the free-throw line. Johnson made two clutch free throws with 38 seconds left, and after a Tyrese Samuel alley-oop dunk for Valley, Bernard calmly sank two more with 26 seconds on the clock to extend the lead to four. Bernard iced the game with two final free throws with seven seconds remaining after securing a critical defensive rebound.

The final score contrasted sharply with pregame analytics. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 124-100 Iowa victory, while its ELO rating system gave Valley a 57.4% probability to win. Instead, the game became the highest-scoring contest for Iowa since a 156-137 win over Motor City on Nov. 29, and the highest combined point total for Valley this season.

Johnson’s all-around performance for Iowa stood out, impacting the game with scoring, rebounding and playmaking. Baugh led all scorers for Valley, spearheading the late comeback attempt with a combination of driving baskets and perimeter shooting. The Wolves’ third-quarter execution proved to be the decisive stretch, providing a cushion that ultimately withstood Valley’s determined final push.

Iowa will face Valley again in Tempe on Thursday. The Suns travel to face Santa Cruz on Saturday, while the Wolves return home to host Long Island on Sunday.
