Rio Grande Valley vs. Mexico City

Preview: Vipers, Capitanes Clash in G League Showdown

MEXICO CITY (Interstat) — A pivotal Western Conference matchup awaits Tuesday when the Rio Grande Valley Vipers visit the Mexico City Capitanes in a G League contest at Estadio Azteca.

Both teams enter with momentum, separated by just one game in the standings. The Capitanes (13-10) hold a slight edge over the visiting Vipers (12-10). The season series is split 1-1, with each team winning on its opponent’s home floor in early December.

The Vipers are led by guard Daishen Nix, who is playing at an elite level. In his last outing, a 131-119 win over Greensboro on Jan. 10, Nix posted a dominant stat line of 35 points, nine rebounds and 12 assists. Over his last 10 games, he has averaged 20.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and 8.1 assists, serving as the engine for Rio Grande Valley’s offense.

Mexico City counters with guard Boo Buie, who is coming off a 29-point performance in a Jan. 9 victory over Santa Cruz. Buie has been a key contributor during the Capitanes’ recent 5-2 stretch, providing scoring and playmaking.

Rio Grande Valley has won two straight, including the high-scoring affair against Greensboro where Efe Abogidi added 23 points and nine rebounds. Mexico City has won four of its last five, most recently defeating Santa Cruz 122-118 on Sunday.

The game will be the first of a quick home-and-home set between the teams, who will meet again Wednesday in Mexico City. For the Vipers, it begins a stretch of four consecutive road games. The Capitanes will play five of their next six at home.

Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. local time Tuesday at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
