South Bay vs. Austin
LEANDER, Texas (Interstat) — A surging South Bay Lakers squad, winners of four straight, will look to continue its momentum against the Western Conference-leading Austin Spurs in a G League matchup Friday night at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.
The game features a compelling clash between two of the league’s most dynamic scorers. South Bay (11-8) is led by guard Kobe Bufkin, who enters on a torrid stretch. Over his last seven games, Bufkin is averaging 24.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists, including a 41-point, 9-assist performance in an overtime loss to Oklahoma City on Dec. 27. He is coming off a near triple-double with 27 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in Tuesday’s 113-101 win over Memphis.
Austin (13-6) counters with forward David Jones, a consistent force who has recorded a double-double in four of his last six outings. Jones is averaging 30.7 points and 10.8 rebounds over that span, highlighted by a 42-point, 10-rebound game in a win at Texas on Dec. 12. Despite his individual brilliance, the Spurs have dropped three of their last four, including a 112-105 home loss to Santa Cruz on Jan. 2 where Jones posted 33 points and 16 rebounds.
The Lakers’ recent success has been fueled by more than just Bufkin. Center Kylor Kelley added 13 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks in the win over Memphis, while guard R.J. Davis contributed 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. The team has averaged 124.5 points during its four-game win streak.
Austin, which holds a two-game lead over South Bay in the conference standings, will aim to leverage its home court to snap its brief skid. The Spurs won the first two meetings of the season series against South Bay last November.
The teams will meet again at the same venue Saturday night. Tip-off Friday is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CST.
