Valley vs. Rio Grande Valley
EDINBURG, Texas (Interstat) — The Rio Grande Valley Vipers used a dominant third-quarter surge to pull away from the Valley Suns and secure a 130-115 victory in a G League game Saturday night at Bert Ogden Arena.
The most important stretch of the game came immediately after halftime. Leading 62-55 at the break, the Vipers erupted for 40 points in the third quarter, turning a competitive contest into a comfortable lead. The period was defined by efficient, high-octane offense from the home team, which shot 46 of 80 from the floor for the game. Rio Grande Valley stretched its advantage to as many as 24 points in the second half, effectively sealing the outcome before the final quarter.
Daishen Nix orchestrated the Vipers’ attack, finishing with 15 points and 10 assists. He was one of four Rio Grande Valley players to score at least 15 points, led by Teddy Allen’s 26 and Tristen Newton’s 24. The Vipers’ ball movement and shot-making were superior, as they assisted on 29 of their 46 field goals and connected on 18 of 39 attempts from 3-point range.
Valley, which fell to 5-14, was led by Damion Baugh’s 26 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Jaden Shackelford added 21 points and Koby Brea scored 22, but the Suns could not match the Vipers’ offensive consistency. Valley shot just 37.5% from the field and was hampered by 10 turnovers, which Rio Grande Valley converted into 18 points.
Despite the lopsided score, the Suns showed resilience on the glass, grabbing 22 offensive rebounds that led to 25 second-chance points. C.J. Huntley contributed 15 points and seven rebounds for Valley.
The win improved Rio Grande Valley’s record to 10-8. The Vipers’ offensive rating of 135.9 on 96 possessions underscored their efficiency, while Valley’s 116.0 rating on 99 possessions was not enough to keep pace.
The game began with a fast-paced first quarter that ended with Rio Grande Valley holding a 34-28 edge, a margin that held steady through the second period. The decisive third-quarter run, however, rendered Valley’s 33-point fourth quarter largely inconsequential.
Rio Grande Valley next travels to face Stockton on Monday. Valley returns home to host Oklahoma City on Tuesday.
