Memphis vs. South Bay
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (Interstat) — In a game defined by relentless offense and a dramatic final-minute collapse, the South Bay Lakers outlasted the Memphis Hustle 125-121 in overtime on Saturday night in a G League contest at the UCLA Health Training Center.
The most critical sequence unfolded in the final seconds of regulation, with the Lakers clinging to a two-point lead. After Memphis’ Lawson Lovering tipped in a miss with four seconds left to tie the game at 118, South Bay called a timeout to advance the ball. On the ensuing inbounds play, Anton Watson’s pass was stolen by Memphis’ Nate Hinton with one second remaining. Hinton was fouled immediately by Bronny James, sending him to the free-throw line with a chance to win the game.
Hinton missed the first free throw, and after a Memphis timeout, he intentionally missed the second. The Lakers secured the rebound, sending the game to an extra period.
In overtime, the Lakers seized control early. Kobe Bufkin opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, and after a Memphis turnover, Bronny James hit a step-back jumper. Bufkin then blocked a Tyler Burton shot on the other end and converted the fast-break opportunity to give South Bay a 125-121 lead with just over two minutes to play. Those seven points in overtime proved decisive, as Memphis managed only a single 3-pointer from Burton in the period, going scoreless over the final 2:42.
The game was an offensive showcase throughout. Memphis built an early lead behind torrid 3-point shooting, finishing 18 of 32 from beyond the arc. South Bay countered with superior efficiency inside, shooting 57.1% from the field on 48-of-84 shooting and dominating the paint.
Drew Timme led South Bay with a near triple-double, scoring 26 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out nine assists. Kobe Bufkin also scored 26 points and added five rebounds. For Memphis, Charlie Brown scored 22 points and had seven assists, while Nate Hinton added 22 points and seven rebounds.
South Bay improved to 10-8 with the win, while Memphis fell to 8-12. The teams will meet again at the same venue on Tuesday.
