Greensboro vs. Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Interstat) — Two of the G League’s hottest teams will clash Saturday when the Grand Rapids Gold host the Greensboro Swarm at Van Andel Arena.

The matchup features the Eastern Conference’s top two teams by winning percentage. The visiting Swarm (14-5) enter with the league’s best record, riding a five-game winning streak that includes a 140-108 demolition of Texas on Wednesday. The Gold (13-6) have won three of their last four and are 8-2 in their last 10 games.

A key subplot is immediate revenge for Greensboro. In the teams’ only prior meeting this season on Dec. 19, Grand Rapids handed the Swarm a 119-106 defeat in Greensboro. The Swarm have not lost since.

Greensboro’s surge has been fueled by balanced scoring and the consistent play of forward Jaylen Sims. Over his last 10 games, Sims is averaging 16.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists. He is coming off a dominant performance against Texas, posting 27 points, five rebounds and six assists in 34 minutes. Guard Terrell Brown notched a triple-double (11 points, 10 rebounds, 13 assists) in that same victory, highlighting the Swarm’s depth.

Grand Rapids counters with its own high-octane guard in James Akinjo, who is in elite form. Over his last five contests, Akinjo is averaging 22.0 points and 9.2 assists, including a 31-point, 9-assist effort in a road win over Motor City on Tuesday. His playmaking will be central to the Gold’s attack against a stout Swarm defense.

The game is the first of a quick home-and-home set between the clubs, who will meet again in Grand Rapids on Monday. Saturday’s contest could have implications for conference supremacy as the season nears its midpoint.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
