Santa Cruz vs. Austin

LEANDER, Texas (Interstat) -- In a stunning reversal of fortune, the Santa Cruz Warriors closed the game on a 17-0 run to stun the Austin Spurs 112-105 in a G League contest Friday night at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.

The decisive surge transformed a game that the Spurs had controlled for long stretches, particularly after a dominant third quarter. Austin, which entered the game with a 13-6 record and had been projected as a heavy favorite, saw its 105-95 lead evaporate over the final four minutes as its offense completely stalled.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably the final defensive stand by Santa Cruz, paired with the relentless scoring of Charles Bassey. After David Jones gave Austin a 105-95 advantage with a driving layup at the 4:47 mark, the Spurs would not score again. The Warriors’ defense forced a series of turnovers and missed shots, while their own offense found a rhythm that had been missing for much of the second half.

Santa Cruz center Charles Bassey was instrumental in the comeback, scoring inside and out. His 3-pointer with 1:10 remaining, assisted by Chance McMillian, capped the run and gave Santa Cruz a 108-105 lead it would not relinquish. Bassey then sealed the game at the free-throw line, making two shots with eight seconds left after securing a defensive rebound.

The game had been a tale of contrasting halves and quarters. Santa Cruz started hot, leading 34-32 after a first quarter that featured eight lead changes. Austin responded with a strong second quarter, outscoring the Warriors 27-17 to take a 59-51 lead into halftime. The Spurs then extended their lead to as many as 15 points in the third quarter, fueled by Stanley Umude and Jones, and entered the final period ahead 92-80.

Austin’s offense, which had been fluid for three quarters, managed only 13 points in the fourth, going scoreless for the final 4:47. The Spurs committed five turnovers in the final frame, including two offensive fouls by Osayi Osifo.

For Santa Cruz, which improved to 5-15, the victory marked a second consecutive win over Austin after a 111-102 decision just two days prior. The Warriors showcased resilience, overcoming a poor second quarter where they scored only 17 points to explode for 33 in the fourth.

Key performances for the Warriors included Bassey’s interior presence and timely shooting, along with critical defensive plays from Malevy Leons and Taevion Kinsey down the stretch. For Austin, David Jones led the offensive effort but the team’s late-game execution failed.

The Spurs, who fell to 13-7, will look to regroup before hosting South Bay on Jan. 9. Santa Cruz continues its road trip at Oklahoma City on Sunday.
