Rio Grande Valley vs. Birmingham

(Interstat) — In a high-octane G League shootout Sunday, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers outlasted the Birmingham Squadron 133-127 at Legacy Arena. The victory improved the Vipers to 7-6 on the season, while the Squadron fell to 4-9.

The game’s defining sequence was a decisive 8-0 run by the Vipers in the final two minutes, transforming a narrow two-point lead into an insurmountable 10-point cushion. With Rio Grande Valley leading 125-123, Cameron Matthews connected on a 29-foot 3-pointer with 1:49 remaining. Following a defensive stop, Efe Abogidi stole the ball from D.J. Carton, leading to a Matthews dunk on a feed from Ricky Council with 1:08 to play. After a Birmingham turnover, free throws from Daishen Nix and Teddy Allen sealed the road win, snapping the Squadron’s late-game momentum.

The contest was an offensive showcase from the opening tip. Birmingham started strong, taking a 34-31 lead after the first quarter behind 12 early points from Jaden Springer. The Vipers responded with a torrent of second-quarter scoring, erupting for 42 points. Teddy Allen was the catalyst, hitting a series of deep 3-pointers as Rio Grande Valley built a 73-59 halftime advantage.

Birmingham refused to capitulate, methodically chipping away at the deficit throughout the second half. The Squadron’s interior combination of Hunter Dickinson and Josh Oduro provided consistent scoring, while Springer and Keion Brooks fueled perimeter attacks. A 3-pointer from Johnny O’Neil with 22 seconds left in the third brought Birmingham within six points, but Ricky Council answered with a buzzer-beating triple to give the Vipers a 91-86 lead entering the final period.

The fourth quarter became a tense back-and-forth affair. The Squadron, leveraging a raucous home crowd, finally drew even and then took brief leads midway through the quarter. A 3-pointer by Keion Brooks gave Birmingham a 109-106 advantage with 6:45 remaining. The Vipers immediately countered with a 7-0 spurt, retaking the lead for good on a Teddy Allen layup with 5:45 left. Birmingham closed to within 125-123 on a Jaden Springer 3-pointer, setting the stage for Rio Grande Valley’s game-clinching run in the final two minutes.

Teddy Allen’s scoring barrage led the Vipers, while Cameron Matthews provided critical two-way plays, including key blocks and clutch 3-point shooting. For Birmingham, Jaden Springer’s aggressive offensive performance kept the Squadron in contention, supported by double-figure efforts from multiple teammates.

The two teams will meet again in a quick rematch Tuesday afternoon at Legacy Arena.
