Salt Lake City vs. Rip City
PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — In a high-octane G League shootout Thursday night, the Salt Lake City Stars avenged a loss from earlier in the week by overwhelming the Rip City Remix 174-146 at the Chiles Center.
The game was effectively decided by a dominant second-quarter surge from the visiting Stars. After a competitive first quarter that ended with Salt Lake City leading 35-32, the Stars unleashed an offensive barrage, outscoring Rip City 52-26 in the period to build a commanding 87-58 halftime lead. That 29-point cushion proved insurmountable for the Remix despite a valiant effort after the break.
The most important part of the game was Salt Lake City’s relentless control of the paint and the glass, spearheaded by center Oscar Tshiebwe. The 6-foot-8, 255-pound big man dominated the interior, recording a monstrous 20-point, 22-rebound double-double in just 30 minutes of play. His work on the offensive boards was particularly devastating, creating numerous second-chance opportunities that fueled the Stars’ record-setting point total.
Salt Lake City’s backcourt provided ample firepower to complement Tshiebwe’s interior presence. E.J. Harkless scored a game-high 34 points and dished out five assists, while backcourt mate Sean East added 22 points and seven assists. John Tonje, a shooting guard from Omaha, Nebraska, contributed 29 points off the bench.
For Rip City, the loss came despite several standout individual performances in a losing cause. Point guard Sean Pedulla of Edmond, Oklahoma, led the Remix with 38 points and eight rebounds. Blake Hinson added 28 points and nine rebounds, and Jayson Kent scored 27 points. The Remix also showcased impressive ball movement, with Cameron Parker tallying 17 assists and Dillon Jones adding 11.
The Stars’ offense operated at a historic efficiency, scoring at least 35 points in every quarter. The 174 total points marked a season high for the team and underscored an offensive clinic that the Remix defense could not contain.
With the victory, Salt Lake City improved its season record to 10-2 and split a two-game set in Portland after losing to the Remix 133-122 on Tuesday. Rip City fell to 6-5 with the defeat.
Both teams continue their schedules on the road Saturday. Salt Lake City returns home to host Valley on Monday, while Rip City travels to face South Bay. The teams are scheduled to meet again for a two-game series in Salt Lake City on Jan. 2 and 3.
