MAINZ, Germany (Interstat) — Schalke 04 defied pregame projections with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga on Sunday at MEWA ARENA.

Marius Bülter scored twice for the visitors, including the decisive goal in the 12th minute of second-half stoppage time. His 26th-minute opener was answered by Leandro Barreiro Martins for Mainz early in the second half. Tom Krauß restored Schalke’s lead at the 60-minute mark, only for Aarón Martín to equalize for Mainz in the 70th.

The frantic finish saw three Mainz players receive yellow cards in stoppage time, with Barreiro Martins earning two and a subsequent red card. The result improved Schalke’s league record to 3-0-1, while Mainz fell to 2-2-1.
