Wolfsburg Stuns Mainz With Three-Goal First Half in Bundesliga Upset
WOLFSBURG, Germany (Interstat) — Wolfsburg defied pregame projections with a commanding 3-0 victory over Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga on Sunday at Volkswagen Arena.
Interstat’s metrics heavily favored Wolfsburg but projected a narrow 1-0 loss. The home side overturned that forecast decisively, scoring all three goals before the 30-minute mark. Defender Sebastiaan Bornauw opened the scoring in the 13th minute, followed by two goals from striker Jonas Wind in the 28th and 5th minute, the latter assisted by Mattias Svanberg.
Mainz, which saw Stefan Bell and Dominik Kohr booked in the first half, managed only two shots on target. Bornauw received a late yellow card for Wolfsburg, which secured just its ninth win across all competitions this season.
