Ajax vs Utrecht

VOLENDAM, Netherlands (Interstat) — Davy Klaassen scored in the 96th minute and added an assist, but Utrecht substitute Gjivai Zechiël equalized in the 106th minute as Ajax and Utrecht played to a 1-1 draw Sunday in an Eredivisie match at Kras Stadion.

The season opener for both sides ended with each team holding a record of zero wins, zero losses and one draw in league play as well as across all competitions. Ajax dominated possession for long stretches but could not break through Utrecht’s defense in regulation.

Klaassen, a midfielder, opened the scoring with a strike in first-half stoppage time of the two-period overtime, which was played after a scoreless first half and a 0-0 regulation time. The goal came off an assist from forward Wout Weghorst, who had a statline of one assist. Klaassen’s goal was his first of the season under new manager Francesco Farioli, who took over this offseason.

Zechiël, a substitute, leveled the match 10 minutes into the first overtime period with a finish assisted by fellow substitute Rafik el Arguioui, who also collected a yellow card earlier in the match. El Arguioui was booked in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time, the first caution of the game. Weghorst received a yellow card in the 107th minute, and Klaassen was cautioned in the 120th minute as tensions rose in the extra periods.

Both teams struggled to generate consistent chances in the opening 90 minutes. Ajax’s Brian Brobbey fired wide in the 30th minute, and Utrecht’s Can Bozdogan forced a save from Ajax goalkeeper Remko Pasveer in the 72nd minute. The match remained physical throughout, with a combined 18 fouls called.

Utrecht, under coach Ron Jans, deployed a compact defensive shape that limited Ajax’s central attacks. The visitors’ best opportunity before the break came in the 20th minute when defender Mike van der Hoorn headed a corner just over the crossbar.

Ajax’s midfield, anchored by Klaassen and Kenneth Taylor, struggled to break lines in the first half. The home side grew into the game after halftime, with Weghorst heading just wide in the 64th minute and Steven Bergwijn striking the post in the 80th minute.

The equalizer came after a Utrecht counterattack. El Arguioui threaded a pass to Zechiël, who slotted past Pasveer with a low shot to the far post. Utrecht’s players celebrated the goal as the Ajax bench appealed for an offside call that was not given.

Klaassen nearly won the match for Ajax in the 114th minute with a curling effort that sailed over the bar. Utrecht’s defense held firm in the final minutes, and the match ended in a stalemate.

The draw leaves both clubs at the bottom half of the early-season table, though it is the first game of the Eredivisie campaign. Ajax will next travel to FC Twente on May 31, while Utrecht hosts Feyenoord on the same date.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Ajax 2, Utrecht 1. Interstat’s ELO system gave Ajax a 79.70 percent probability to win.
