Petro de Luanda vs 1º de Maio

LUANDA, Angola (Interstat) — Unbeaten in its last six matches, first-place Petro de Luanda looks to continue its dominant run through the Girabola when it hosts 1º de Maio on Saturday, May 16.

Petro took the most recent head-to-head meeting 3-2 on Feb. 4, but that result stands as one of the club’s narrowest victories this season. Since then, the Angolan powerhouse has compiled a 5-0-1 record, conceding just three goals across those six matches. Saturday’s hosts most recently defeated Guelson 2-0 on May 9, following a 5-2 thrashing of Redonda on May 2 and a 6-0 demolition of Luanda City on April 25. Petro’s only dropped points over the past two months came in a pair of scoreless draws against Kabuscorp and Interclube.

The club’s form dates to early March, when it posted a 3-0 win at Bravos do Maquis and a 4-1 victory over Sagrada Esperanca. Overall, Petro has allowed more than one goal in only one of its last 10 league matches.

1º de Maio enters the matchup on its own two-game winning streak. The visitors blanked Acad Lobito 1-0 on May 10 and routed Guelson 4-1 on May 6. Those results followed a 2-0 win at Redonda on April 26, giving 1º de Maio three victories in its last four outings.

Consistency has eluded the club, however. It lost 3-1 at Interclube on April 8, fell 3-2 at Sao Salvador Kongo on March 21, and dropped a 1-0 decision at Luanda City on April 17. Earlier in the season, 1º de Maio managed draws against Recr Do Libolo and 1 de Agosto but also suffered losses to Wiliete and Luanda City.

The visitors’ recent record against competition near the top of the table is mixed. They held 1 de Agosto to a 1-1 draw on March 15 but lost to Interclube by two goals.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 2-0 victory for the hosts.

Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday at a venue to be determined. Petro de Luanda leads the Girabola standings, while 1º de Maio sits in the middle of the pack and is seeking to build momentum for a push toward the upper half of the table.
