MADRID (Interstat) — Ademola Lookman scored in the 21st minute Sunday to give Club Atlético de Madrid a 1-0 victory over Girona in a La Liga match at Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

Lookman, a forward, netted the lone goal with an assist from defender Robin Le Normand. Midfielder Javi Morcillo also was credited with an assist. Le Normand received a yellow card in the 23rd minute, and Morcillo was booked in the 85th.

The win lifted Atletico Madrid to a 1-0 record in league play and 1-0 overall. Girona dropped to 0-1 in both competitions.

The match marked the season opener for both sides. Atletico Madrid’s defense held Girona scoreless throughout the contest. Girona failed to register a goal despite generating opportunities. The result gave the home side an early boost in the standings.

No other goals were scored, and neither team recorded additional disciplinary actions beyond the two yellow cards. The victory extended Atletico Madrid’s strong start under manager Diego Simeone.
