Sydney and Newcastle Jets Draw 1‑1 in A-League Opener

SYDNEY (Interstat) — Sydney and the Newcastle Jets played to a 1-1 draw Saturday in their A-League opener at Allianz Stadium.

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos gave the Jets the lead in the 50th minute with a goal assisted by midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler, who received a yellow card in the 17th minute. Eight minutes later, substitute Eli Adams equalized for Sydney off an assist from fellow substitute Joe Shaughnessy. Shaughnessy was cautioned in the 73rd minute.

Both clubs finished with identical season records of no wins, no losses and one draw in league play, as well as across all competitions. The result was a reversal of Interstat’s pre-match projections, which had Sydney as a heavy favorite but saw the home side salvage a point late. Sydney will look to build on the draw in its next match, while Newcastle Jets aim for a first win.
