VILLARREAL, Spain (Interstat) — Sevilla defeated Villarreal CF 3-2 on Wednesday at Estadio de la Cerámica in the La Liga opener for both teams. Gerard Moreno put Villarreal ahead in the 13th minute, but Georges Mikautadze equalized for Sevilla in the 20th. Joaquín Martínez Gauna gave Sevilla the lead in the 36th, and Kike Salas extended it just before halftime in second-half stoppage time. Akor Adams pulled one back for Villarreal in the 72nd minute. Salas, Moreno, Mikautadze, Adams and Martínez Gauna each scored. Carmona, Renato Veiga and Ayoze Pérez had assists. Yellow cards were issued to Pérez in the 81st minute, Veiga in the 90th plus two and Carmona in the 90th plus three. Sevilla improved to 1-0-0 overall and in league play, while Villarreal fell to 0-1-0.
