AVS Futebol vs Sporting Lisbon
LISBON, Portugal (Interstat) — Sporting Lisbon visits AVS Futebol on Sunday, April 26, in a Primeira Liga match with vastly different stakes for the two sides.
Sporting, chasing the league title, enters the matchup at AVS’s home ground looking to rebound from a 2-1 loss to Benfica on April 19. That defeat ended a strong run for the Lions, who had won four of their previous five matches, including a 4-0 victory over Alverca and a 4-2 win against Santa Clara. Sporting’s only dropped points in that stretch came in a 2-2 draw at Sporting Braga on March 7.
The recent head-to-head history heavily favors the visitors. Sporting routed AVS 6-0 on Dec. 13, 2025, a result that highlighted the gulf in class between the two clubs. AVS has not beaten Sporting in their last three meetings, with its most recent win coming in February 2024.
AVS enters the contest in a desperate fight to avoid relegation. The club is winless in its last four matches, though it earned a valuable point in a 2-2 draw at Rio Ave on April 17. Prior to that, AVS played to a 1-1 draw against Vitoria SC, but suffered a 3-0 loss to Gil Vicente on April 3. The team has struggled to score, tallying just two goals in its last four games, and has been shut out five times in its last seven outings.
Sporting’s attack is led by striker Viktor Gyokeres, who has been a consistent threat throughout the season. AVS will need a disciplined defensive performance to contain him and avoid a repeat of December’s heavy defeat.
An Interstat game simulator projects a 2-1 victory for Sporting Lisbon.
Following Sunday’s match, Sporting returns home to face Tondela on April 29, while AVS travels to Nacional on May 2.
