Girona vs Mallorca

GIRONA, Spain (Interstat) — Samu Costa scored in the 43rd minute and Mallorca held on for a 1-0 victory over Girona on Friday, May 1, 2026, at Estadi Municipal de Montilivi in a La Liga match that tightened the middle of the table.

Costa’s goal came from a well-worked sequence in which defender Vitor Reis provided the assist. The visitors broke through just before halftime after a period of sustained pressure, and Girona could not find an equalizer despite creating several chances in the second half.

The match was chippy throughout, with six yellow cards handed out. Viktor Tsyhankov was booked in first-half stoppage time, one minute after Costa’s goal. Pablo Maffeo followed in the 58th minute, Vitor Reis in the 64th, Johan Mojica in the 82nd, Thomas Lemar in the 90th minute and Bryan Gil in the fifth minute of second-half added time.

Mallorca improved its La Liga record to 10 wins, 15 losses and eight draws. In all competitions, the club now stands at 12 wins, 15 losses and eight draws. Girona’s league record dropped to nine wins, 11 losses and six draws; its overall season mark is identical at nine wins, 11 losses and six draws.

The result avenged Mallorca’s earlier loss to Girona this season. In the most recent head-to-head meeting on Jan. 4, 2026, Girona beat Mallorca 2-1 at home.

Mallorca entered the match on an upswing after a busy stretch. In its previous five league games, the club drew at Valencia 1-1 on April 21, beat Rayo Vallecano 3-0 on April 12, stunned Real Madrid 2-1 on April 4, lost at Elche 2-1 on March 21 and drew at Osasuna 2-2 on March 7. Overall, Mallorca has posted mixed results against top competition, including wins over Real Betis, Villarreal and Athletic Bilbao earlier in the season, but also heavy losses to Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Girona had been in respectable form before Friday, with a 3-2 loss at Real Betis on April 21, a 1-1 draw at Real Madrid on April 10, a 1-0 win over Villarreal on April 6, a 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on March 14 and a 1-1 draw at Levante on March 7. The club had shown resilience against stronger opponents, including a 2-1 win over Barcelona on Feb. 16 and a 2-0 win over Espanyol in January, but inconsistency has dogged its campaign.

Both teams are looking ahead to pivotal fixtures. Mallorca hosts Villarreal on Sunday, May 10, then travels to Getafe on Wednesday, May 13. Girona visits Rayo Vallecano on Monday, May 11, and hosts Real Sociedad on Thursday, May 14.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Girona 1, Mallorca 1, while Interstat’s Elo system gave Girona a 51.30 percent probability to win before the match.
