Saint Polten W vs FC Red Bull Salzburg

VIENNA (Interstat) — Saint Polten W hosts FC Red Bull Salzburg on Saturday in a Frauenliga matchup that could shape the title race, with the league’s top club looking to extend its dominance against a struggling visitor.

An Interstat game simulator projects a 1-0 victory for Saint Polten, a result that would extend the home side’s unbeaten streak in league play. Saint Polten enters the match after a 2-0 win over Sturm Graz W on May 1, with goals in each half. The club has won six of its past seven league matches and is averaging nearly four goals per game at home this season.

Saint Polten’s only loss in domestic competition came in February, a 2-1 defeat at FK Austria Wien. The club also suffered heavy losses in December UEFA Women’s Champions League play, falling 5-0 to Juventus and 6-1 to Roma, but has been dominant in the Frauenliga overall.

Saint Polten defeated Salzburg 6-1 on Nov. 23 in their most recent meeting.

FC Red Bull Salzburg is looking to snap a three-match winless streak. The visitors played to a scoreless draw against FK Austria Wien on May 3, following back-to-back 1-0 losses to Sturm Graz both in April and last September. Salzburg has managed only one goal in its past four matches.

Defensively, Salzburg has been solid in recent weeks, conceding just one goal in its last three contests.

Both sides play a home-and-home series over the next two weeks. After Saturday’s fixture in St. Polten, the teams meet again May 17 in Salzburg. That match is followed by road games at Sturm Graz for Saint Polten on May 22, while Salzburg plays at Austria Wien on May 23. The Frauenliga regular season ends in late May.

Saint Polten’s depth has been key, with six different players scoring in the past two matches. But Salzburg’s defense has kept opponents off the board in two of its last three games, setting up a matchup between Saint Polten’s attack and Salzburg’s back line.

Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. local time.
