Czechia vs South Africa
PRAGUE (Interstat) — Czechia will host South Africa in a World Cup group-stage match Thursday at Letná Stadium, with both sides seeking their first victory of the tournament after opening-day defeats.
Czechia (0-1-0) enters the contest following a 2-1 loss to South Korea on June 11. The squad has shown inconsistency this season, with a 2-2 draw against Ireland on March 26, a 6-0 rout of Gibraltar on Nov. 17, but also a surprising 2-1 defeat to the Faroe Islands on Oct. 12. Other results include a scoreless draw with Croatia on Oct. 9 and a 2-0 win over Montenegro on Sept. 5.
South Africa (0-1-0) also lost its opener, falling 2-0 to Mexico on June 11. Coach Hugo Broos’s side has been a mixed bag this season, with a 3-1 loss to Cameroon on Jan. 4, a 3-0 win over Rwanda on Oct. 14, and consecutive 1-1 draws with Nigeria — both home and away in September — plus a scoreless draw at Zimbabwe on Oct. 10. A 3-0 victory over Lesotho on Sept. 5 rounded out the run.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 1-1 draw.
Both teams will look to build momentum. Czechia’s next match is against Mexico U23 on Wednesday, June 24, while South Africa faces South Korea the same day.
Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. local time.
