Winterthur vs Luzern

WINTERTHUR, Switzerland (Interstat) — Oscar Kabwit scored twice and Luzern cruised to a 3-0 victory over Winterthur on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Stadion Schützenwiese in a Swiss Super League match.

Kabwit opened the scoring in the 39th minute and added his second goal in the 68th minute, both coming before Luzern’s Pius Dorn found the net in the 54th minute. Stefan Knežević, who entered the match as a substitute, provided the assist on one of Luzern’s goals. The clean sheet marked a dominant response for Luzern, which had drawn 3-3 with Servette on May 9 and beaten Zurich 1-0 on May 12.

Winterthur, playing on its home pitch, struggled to generate consistent offense and was reduced to 10 men when Tibault Citherlet received a red card in first-half stoppage time, one minute past the 45th. Citherlet’s dismissal came after a separate incident that drew a yellow card for Adrian Bajrami in the second minute of the match. Two more yellow cards were issued in the second half: Knežević in the 85th minute and Stéphane Cueni in the 90th.

The loss dropped Winterthur to 5 wins, 14 losses and 6 draws in league play, with an overall record of 7 wins, 15 losses and 6 draws across all competitions. Luzern improved to 13 wins, 12 losses and 10 draws in the Super League, and 15 wins, 14 losses and 10 draws overall.

The result reversed the trend of recent head-to-head meetings. In their previous encounter, March 15, 2026, Winterthur beat Luzern 2-1 on the road. Before that, on Nov. 29, 2025, Winterthur won 3-1 at home, and the clubs played to a 2-2 draw on Oct. 25, 2025. Luzern had not defeated Winterthur in the previous three meetings before Saturday.

Winterthur’s recent form had been uneven. The home side entered the match having lost 3-2 at Grasshopper II on May 12, after a 2-1 win over Lausanne Sport on May 9. Prior to that, Winterthur drew 2-2 with Zurich on May 2 and lost 5-3 at Servette on April 26. Luzern, conversely, had been building momentum. Following the draw with Servette, Luzern beat Lausanne Sport 3-1 on May 2 and topped Grasshopper II 2-1 on April 25.

Saturday’s match was the first of the season between the two teams at Stadion Schützenwiese that did not produce a Winterthur victory. The home side had won three of the last four meetings, with the only exception being the October draw.

Luzern’s attack clicked early, with Kabwit finding space in the box to slot home the opener. Dorn doubled the lead just before the hour mark, and Kabwit completed his brace midway through the second half. Luzern’s defense, which had conceded three goals in each of its previous two league matches, tightened up against a Winterthur side that had scored only two goals in its last four games across all competitions.

Winterthur’s season overall has been marked by inconsistency. The club has managed just five league wins, with its most recent league victory coming against Luzern on March 15 before a loss to Grasshopper II and a win over Lausanne Sport. In non-league matches, Winterthur added two additional wins but also suffered heavy defeats, including a 6-1 loss to Young Boys on Feb. 14.

Luzern’s overall season picture includes solid results against top competition. The team has not lost consecutive league matches since late November 2025, when it fell to Winterthur and then Servette. Since then, Luzern has posted several high-scoring wins, including a 4-1 victory over Basel on Feb. 22 and a 4-1 win at Zurich on Feb. 14.

The match also featured a substitute impact from Knežević, whose assist helped seal the victory. Knežević’s yellow card in the 85th minute was his only blemish on an otherwise positive individual performance.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Winterthur 2, Luzern 2. Interstat’s ELO system gave Luzern a 79.00 percent probability to win.
