Porto, Nottingham Forest Draw in Europa League Opener

PORTO, Portugal (Interstat) — FC Porto and Nottingham Forest played to a 1-1 draw in their Europa League group stage opener Thursday at Estádio do Dragão.

The match featured two goals in a frantic three-minute span early in the first half. Nottingham Forest’s William Gomes opened the scoring in the 11th minute, but Porto defender Martim Fernandes answered just two minutes later, heading in a corner kick delivered by midfielder Gabriel Veiga.

The match, which settled after the early flurry, played out largely as projected by Interstat’s game simulator. Its pre-match ELO rating gave Porto a 67.3 percent probability to win, but the Portuguese side was unable to find a winner against the English club.

Both teams begin their Europa League campaign with a draw. Porto next faces Maccabi Tel-Aviv, while Forest meets Bayer Leverkusen in the second group stage match.
