Sassuolo Upsets Como in Serie A Opener Despite Heavy Odds
REGGIO EMILIA, Italy (Interstat) — Sassuolo opened its Serie A season with a 2-1 comeback victory over favored Como on Friday at Mapei Stadium. The match defied projections that heavily favored the visitors.
Cristian Volpato put Sassuolo ahead in the 42nd minute, but Como’s Mbala equalized just two minutes later. Substitute Nicolás Paz then scored the decisive goal in second-half stoppage time to secure the win for the home side.
The result was an upset. Statistical models had given Como an overwhelming probability to win and projected a draw. The frantic match featured seven yellow cards, including one for Volpato, who finished with a goal and an assist.
With the win, Sassuolo begins its campaign with a victory, while Como starts with a loss.
