BIEL/BIENNE, Switzerland (Interstat) — England’s under-19 women’s national team opened its UEFA European Championship qualification campaign with a dominant 5-0 victory over Latvia on Thursday at Tissot Arena.

The home side controlled the match from the start, with defender Zara Shaw opening the scoring in the 12th minute. The attack surged after halftime, adding four more goals. Layla Drury, Chloe Hylton, Vera Jones and Rachel Maltby all found the net in a comprehensive performance that far exceeded Interstat’s pre-match projection of a 2-1 England win. The simulator had given England an 82.1% probability to win.

The result leaves England with a 1-0 record in Group 9 qualifying, while Latvia starts 0-1.
