Avellino vs Catanzaro
AVELLINO, Italy (Interstat) — In a dramatic and chaotic finish at Stadio Partenio on Saturday, Avellino and visiting Catanzaro played to a 1-1 draw in a Serie B match that saw a goalkeeper become an unlikely scoring hero deep into stoppage time.
The match, characterized by persistent fouls and a flurry of cards, appeared destined for a narrow victory for the home side after substitute Pietro Iemmello broke a tense deadlock in the 60th minute. Iemmello’s goal, assisted by defender Tommaso Cancellotti, rewarded Avellino’s increasing pressure in the second half and seemed set to secure three critical points in their league campaign.
Catanzaro, which entered the match with a stronger season record, struggled to find a consistent attacking rhythm against a disciplined Avellino defense for much of the contest. The physical nature of the game was established early, with four yellow cards issued in the first 40 minutes alone. The tension escalated further when Catanzaro substitute Nicolò Brighenti, booked in the 56th minute, received a second yellow and was sent off in the 75th minute, forcing his side to play a man down for the final stretch.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Catanzaro pressed forward in desperation as the clock ticked past 90 minutes. In a stunning turn of events during the fifth minute of added time, Catanzaro goalkeeper Antony Iannarilli ventured into the Avellino penalty area for a final corner kick. The decision proved inspired, as Iannarilli managed to get on the end of the service and headed the ball into the net to snatch a dramatic equalizer. The goalkeeper, who was also credited with the assist on the play, was subsequently shown a yellow card amid the frenetic celebrations.
The result was statistically foreshadowed by Interstat’s game simulator, which had projected a 1-1 final score. Their ELO system had given Catanzaro a slight edge with a 50.40 percent probability to win outright. The draw extends Catanzaro’s recent pattern of tight matches, following a 1-1 draw with AC Monza on April 6. For Avellino, the late concession meant dropping two points at home after their 2-0 loss to Palermo on April 5.
With the draw, Catanzaro’s record in Serie B this season moves to 14 wins, 4 losses and 9 draws, maintaining their position in the upper tier of the league table. Avellino’s league record now stands at 9 wins, 10 losses and 5 draws, as they continue to seek consistency in the middle of the standings. The result also keeps the season series competitive, following Catanzaro’s 1-0 victory in the first head-to-head meeting on Dec. 13, 2025.
Catanzaro will look to build on the momentum of the late rally when they host Modena on Tuesday. Avellino, meanwhile, must regroup from the stoppage-time disappointment before traveling to face Mantova next Saturday.
