Galatasaray vs Liverpool FC

ISTANBUL (Interstat) — A pivotal Champions League round of 16 second leg is set for Tuesday as Galatasaray hosts Liverpool at Rams Park, holding a narrow 1-0 aggregate advantage from their first meeting.

The Turkish champions, buoyed by a fervent home support, will aim to protect their lead and secure a historic quarterfinal berth. They enter the match with momentum after a 1-0 domestic win over Besiktas on Saturday. Their form at home in Europe has been stout, including the first-leg victory over Liverpool last September.

However, manager Okan Buruk’s squad has shown inconsistency, suffering a 2-0 loss to Konyaspor in late February and a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in their other recent Champions League outing.

Liverpool, the six-time European champion, arrives in Istanbul seeking to overturn the deficit. The English Premier League side is coming off a statement 6-0 thrashing of Qarabag in late January and has been formidable in knockout play this campaign, with consecutive clean-sheet wins over Inter Milan and Marseille.

The Reds’ away form in Europe has been mixed, however, featuring both a 5-1 rout of Eintracht Frankfurt and the loss here in September. Their 4-1 defeat at PSV in November remains a recent blemish.

The head-to-head history adds intrigue. Galatasaray’s 1-0 win earlier this season is its only victory in the last five encounters between the clubs. Liverpool will draw on the memory of a famous comeback in Istanbul to win the 2005 Champions League final, though at a different stadium.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, Liverpool is projected to advance with a 2-1 victory on the afternoon, which would see the tie end 2-2 on aggregate and force extra time or penalties.

The winner will move into the quarterfinal draw. Galatasaray’s next scheduled match is a domestic league fixture against Istanbul Basaksehir on March 14.
