Johor Darul Ta’zim Upsets Favored Hiroshima in AFC Champions League Opener
JOHOR BAHRU, Malaysia (March 4, 2026) (Interstat) — Johor Darul Ta’zim FC delivered a stunning 3-1 victory over Japan’s S’frecce Hiroshima in AFC Champions League play Wednesday at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, defying heavy pre-match odds.
Interstat’s ELO system gave Hiroshima a 76 percent probability to win, but the Malaysian side dominated the second half. Ager Aketxe opened the scoring for Hiroshima in the 52nd minute, but JDT responded with three unanswered goals. Forward Bergson led the comeback with a goal and an assist, setting up Marcos Guilherme’s 84th-minute strike after scoring himself in the 63rd. Nené added a third for JDT two minutes later.
Hiroshima’s challenge was hampered by a 26th-minute red card to substitute Kim Jusung, who had entered and received a yellow card earlier. The result gives JDT a winning start in the continental competition.
