Wolfsburg Upsets Lyon in Champions League Opener

WOLFSBURG, Germany (March 24, 2026) (Interstat) — VfL Wolfsburg opened its UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign with a 1-0 upset of OL Lyonnes on Tuesday at Volkswagen Arena. The lone goal came in the 14th minute when forward Lineth Beerensteyn finished a play assisted by goalkeeper Stina Johannes. Substitute Damaris Egurrola also registered an assist on the play.

The result defied a pregame projection that heavily favored Lyon. Wolfsburg’s defense held firm against the French side, which failed to score. The match grew tense late, with three yellow cards issued in the final 25 minutes, including one to Egurrola and Wolfsburg’s Camilla Küver. With the win, Wolfsburg starts the competition 1-0, while Lyon begins 0-1.
