Nurnberg W vs Koeln W

NÜRNBERG, Germany (Interstat) — Substitute Sandra Jessen scored the decisive goal in the 28th minute as visiting Koeln W held off a late rally to defeat Nurnberg W 2-1 in Frauen Bundesliga play on Sunday at Max-Morlock-Stadion.

The result provided a valuable away victory for Koeln, improving its league record to five wins, eight losses and three draws this season. Nurnberg, meanwhile, saw its difficult campaign continue, falling to five wins, 12 losses and two draws in Bundesliga action.

Koeln established control early, capitalizing on a set piece to open the scoring in the 19th minute. Laura Donhauser, also entering the match as a substitute, headed home a service from midfielder Sanja Homann to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The advantage doubled just nine minutes later through another impactful substitute. Jessen found the net, with the assist credited to midfielder Maëlle Seguin, putting Koeln firmly in command before the half-hour mark.

The match grew increasingly physical as Nurnberg fought to get back into the contest. Koeln’s Carlotta Imping received the first yellow card in the 34th minute, followed by a booking for her teammate Leia Varley seven minutes later.

Nurnberg’s persistent pressure finally paid off in the 80th minute. Forward Nastassja Lein pulled a goal back for the home side, finishing an assist from fellow substitute Adriana Achcińska to set up a tense finale.

The closing stages were marked by further discipline from the referee. Nurnberg’s Seguin was shown a yellow card in the 81st minute, shortly after her team’s goal. A flurry of cautions followed deep into stoppage time, with Koeln’s Meret Günster and Achcińska booked, along with Nurnberg’s Homann.

The victory defied pre-match projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 2-1 win for Nurnberg W. Their ELO rating system had given the home side a 61.2 percent probability of victory.

For Koeln, the win snaps a two-game losing streak in the Bundesliga, following defeats to Union Berlin W and Bayern Munich W. Their form has been inconsistent, with the team unable to secure consecutive league victories since early December.

Nurnberg’s loss extends a frustrating pattern of narrow defeats, having now dropped four of its last five Bundesliga matches. The team has shown offensive capability, including a five-goal outburst against Carl Zeiss Jena last month, but has struggled for defensive solidity.

Koeln W will look to build momentum when it hosts Eintracht Frankfurt W in its next Bundesliga fixture on Saturday. Nurnberg W faces a daunting challenge, traveling to face powerhouse Bayern Munich W, also on Saturday.
