Zamalek Edges Kaizer Chiefs in CAF Confederation Cup Group Stage Opener
CAIRO (Interstat) — Zamalek SC opened its CAF Confederation Cup campaign with a 2-1 victory over South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday at Suez Canal Stadium.
Forward Juan Alvina opened the scoring with a header in the 53rd minute and assisted on Abdalla El Said’s 72nd-minute goal for a two-goal lead. Kaizer Chiefs substitute Makabi Lilepo answered just four minutes later with a header, but the visitors could not find an equalizer.
The result defied the pre-match projection from Interstat, which simulated a 1-1 draw. Zamalek improved to 1-0-0 in the competition, while Kaizer Chiefs fell to 0-1-0. The match featured nine yellow cards, including one to Zamalek goalkeeper El Mahdy Soliman in stoppage time.
