Augsburg vs Stuttgart
STUTTGART, Germany (Interstat) — Visiting VfB Stuttgart delivered a stunning and emphatic statement to open its Bundesliga season, routing FC Augsburg 5-2 behind a second-half outburst Sunday at WWK Arena.
The match, which defied pregame projections of a tight contest, was transformed after halftime by a devastating three-goal blitz from Stuttgart in the space of just 12 minutes, turning a narrow lead into an insurmountable rout.
Stuttgart’s Deniz Undav opened the scoring in the 12th minute, setting an early tone for the visitors. The advantage was doubled just before the half-hour mark when Tiago Tomás found the net, putting Augsburg under significant pressure.
The home side, however, provided a brief moment of hope just two minutes later. Defender Fabian Rieder pulled a goal back in the 31st minute, sending the teams into halftime with Stuttgart leading 2-1.
Any momentum for Augsburg evaporated immediately after the restart. Stuttgart substitute Nikolas Nartey, who had entered the match at halftime, needed only seven minutes to make an impact, restoring Stuttgart’s two-goal cushion with a strike in the 57th minute.
The game was then decisively broken open in a chaotic minute of play. Undav secured his brace for Stuttgart in the 58th minute, pushing the lead to 4-1. Before the home supporters could process that goal, Augsburg’s Anton Kade responded instantly, scoring in the 71st minute to make it 4-2 and offer a faint lifeline.
Stuttgart’s substitutes, however, ensured there would be no dramatic comeback. Nartey turned provider in the 83rd minute, setting up fellow substitute Anton Kade for Stuttgart’s fifth and final goal, sealing the comprehensive victory. Augsburg’s Ermedin Demirović scored a late consolation goal in the 71st minute, but it did little to alter the dominant narrative of the match.
The lopsided result was a surprise based on pregame analytics. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a far closer 2-1 finish for Stuttgart, while its ELO system gave Stuttgart only a 50.90 percent probability of securing all three points.
The match was a physical affair, with four yellow cards issued in the second half. Stuttgart’s Nartey was booked in the 63rd minute, followed by Augsburg’s Chema in the 68th. Augsburg’s Lorenz Assignon and Stuttgart’s Dimitris Giannoulis also received cautions in quick succession in the 77th and 78th minutes, respectively.
With the victory, Stuttgart begins its Bundesliga campaign with a perfect record of one win and no losses. Augsburg starts its season with one loss and no wins. The records for both clubs across all competitions mirror their league starts.
