Mamelodi Sundowns Held to 1‑1 Draw by FC Saint-Eloi Lupopo in CAF Champions League Opener
LUBUMBASHI, Congo (Interstat) — Mamelodi Sundowns and FC Saint-Eloi Lupopo played to a 1-1 draw in a CAF Champions League group stage match Sunday at Stade du TP Mazembe.
The result defied pregame projections that heavily favored the visiting South African side. Sundowns opened the scoring in the 19th minute when forward Henoc Molia finished a play assisted by Jean Benoît Tukumbane. Lupopo’s equalizer came in the 55th minute as substitute Jayden Adams headed in a cross from fellow substitute Nuno Santos.
Molia was central to the match, also assisting on his team’s goal before being shown a yellow card shortly after his score. The physical contest featured four total yellow cards. Both teams began their Champions League campaigns with a draw, moving to 0-0-1 records in the competition.
