Estoril vs Gil Vicente
ESTORIL, Portugal (Interstat) — Yanis Begraoui scored twice in a six-minute span late in the second half to propel Estoril to a 3-1 comeback victory over Gil Vicente in a Primeira Liga match on Sunday.
The result at Estádio António Coimbra da Mota snapped a two-game winless streak for the home side and avenged a 2-0 loss to Gil Vicente in the reverse fixture last September.
Gil Vicente, which entered the match on a three-game winning streak in league play, took an early lead. Forward Felix Bacher opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to put the visitors ahead.
That lead held for more than 50 minutes as Gil Vicente managed the tempo. However, the match turned decisively in Estoril’s favor in a frantic closing period.
Begraoui, a second-half substitute, announced his arrival emphatically. He leveled the score in the 74th minute, finishing a swift counterattack to ignite the home crowd. He then completed the turnaround just six minutes later, in the 80th minute, slotting home from close range after sustained pressure from the Estoril attack to give his team a lead it would not relinquish.
The victory improves Estoril’s record in the Primeira Liga to six wins, seven losses and eight draws. Across all competitions, the club now stands at seven wins, eight losses and nine draws. The loss halts Gil Vicente’s positive momentum in the domestic league, where its record shifts to 11 wins, five losses and six draws. Its overall record across all competitions is now 14 wins, 10 losses and nine draws.
The outcome defied the pre-match projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 1-1 draw. The same service’s ELO rating system had given Estoril a 56% probability of victory.
Gil Vicente had been in strong form, with victories over Sporting Braga, Moreirense and Famalicao in its previous three league outings. Estoril, meanwhile, was looking to rebound from a 3-0 defeat to AVS Futebol the previous weekend.
The win provides a significant boost for Estoril as it prepares for a challenging away fixture against Sporting Lisbon on Friday. Gil Vicente will look to regroup before its next league match, a home encounter against Benfica on March 2.
