BUDAPEST, Hungary (Interstat) — Ujpest II opened its NB I season with a 2-1 upset victory over favored Debrecen on Friday at Szusza Ferenc Stadion.

Forward Aljoša Matko powered the home side, scoring in the 15th and 63rd minutes. He also assisted on a 67th-minute goal by substitute Amos Youga, which proved crucial after Debrecen had pulled one back just four minutes prior.

The match was contentious, featuring five yellow cards. Debrecen’s Tamás Szűcs received a yellow in the 40th minute and was sent off with a red card in the 55th.

The result defied pregame projections that heavily favored Debrecen. Ujpest II begins the campaign 1-0-0, while Debrecen starts 0-1-0.
