MALACATÁN, Guatemala (Interstat) — Frank de León scored deep in stoppage time Wednesday to give Malacateco a 1-0 victory over Xelaju in a Liga Nacional match at Estadio Municipal Santa Lucía.

The decisive moment came in the third minute of added time when de León found the net, breaking a deadlock in a match that statistical projections had favored to end in a draw. The result in the Guatemalan league contest improved Malacateco’s record to 14 wins, 13 losses and one draw this season. Xelaju fell to 13 wins, 14 losses and six draws.

The loss for Xelaju continued a pattern of narrow road defeats, while Malacateco secured a crucial home win. The teams are scheduled to meet again in a rematch on March 1.
