PUNTARENAS, Costa Rica (Interstat) — Puntarenas delivered a significant upset Saturday, defeating league leader LD Alajuelense 2-0 in a Primera División match at Estadio Municipal de Puntarenas.

Kliver Gómez opened the scoring in the 13th minute. Randy Taylor doubled the advantage just before halftime in the 45th, securing a crucial victory for the hosts. The shutout win defied pregame projections that heavily favored Alajuelense.

The result strengthens Puntarenas to a mid-table position while dealing a blow to Alajuelense’s campaign. Alajuelense entered the match with the best record in the competition but was held scoreless against a determined Puntarenas defense. The teams had played to draws in their two previous meetings this season.
