NEC vs Telstar

AP Sports Preview: NEC vs. Telstar

NIJMEGEN, Netherlands (Interstat) — NEC hosts Telstar on Saturday, May 2, in an Eredivisie matchup that carries playoff implications near the middle of the table. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. local time at Goffertstadion.

The teams played to a 2-2 draw in their most recent meeting Dec. 13, a result that extended a pattern of close contests. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 2-1 victory for the home side.

NEC enters the match off a 1-1 draw at Twente on April 25. The result continued a solid run for NEC, which is unbeaten in its last four matches (2-0-2) since a 3-2 loss to Fortuna Sittard on Feb. 28. NEC has shown offensive firepower this season, scoring three goals in wins over PSV and AZ, but has also been prone to defensive lapses, allowing three goals in losses to Fortuna Sittard and Utrecht.

Telstar arrives in Nijmegen following a 4-1 victory over Jong Sparta on April 22 — a much-needed result after a difficult stretch. Prior to that win, Telstar had lost four of its previous five matches, including a 4-1 defeat at Utrecht on April 11 and a 2-0 loss to Groningen on April 4. Telstar’s form has been erratic: it followed a 3-1 win over PSV on March 22 with a 3-0 loss to Heerenveen on March 14, then rebounded with a 3-0 win over NAC Breda on Feb. 27 before dropping matches to Feyenoord and PEC Zwolle.

Key trends favor NEC. The home side has been resilient in close games, posting draws against Feyenoord and Ajax. Telstar has struggled on the road, with recent away losses to Utrecht and Groningen.

Following Saturday’s match, NEC travels to Groningen on May 10, then hosts Go Ahead Eagles on May 17. Telstar hosts Heracles on May 10 before visiting Volendam on May 17.
