ALKMAAR, Netherlands (Interstat) — AZ began its Eredivisie campaign with a 2-0 victory over Fortuna Sittard on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at AFAS Stadion.

The home side established control early with two quick first-half goals. Forward Mexx Meerdink opened the scoring in the 11th minute, followed by a strike from midfielder Sven Mijnans just four minutes later.

AZ’s defense held firm to secure the clean sheet against a Fortuna Sittard side that struggled to generate offense. The visitors finished the match with three yellow cards, shown to Iván Márquez, Yassin Oukili and Lance Duijvestijn.

The result outperformed a Interstat projection that favored AZ but predicted a 2-1 scoreline. AZ starts the season with a win, while Fortuna Sittard begins with a loss.
