Al Bataeh CSC vs Al Jazira SCC
SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates (Interstat) — In a match that defied pregame projections, Al Bataeh CSC and Al Jazira SCC opened their Arabian Gulf League campaigns with a 1-1 draw on Thursday at Khalid bin Mohammed Stadium.
The result left both clubs with identical records to start the season: no wins, no losses and one draw across all competitions.
The game began in stunning fashion, with Al Jazira’s midfielder Aziz Gʻaniyev silencing the home crowd just three minutes into the contest. Gʻaniyev finished a play from the right side, giving the visiting side an immediate advantage. His early goal appeared to validate the pregame model from Interstat, which had projected a 1-0 victory for Al Jazira.
The match grew increasingly tense as the first half progressed. Gʻaniyev, the early hero, received a yellow card in the 19th minute. Al Jazira substitute Khalifa Al Hammadi was also booked in the 33rd minute, one of several players from both sides to see cautions in a physical contest.
The second half saw a flurry of disciplinary action in a single minute. In the 53rd minute, Al Bataeh’s Jay-Dee Geusens, Al Jazira’s Mohammad Juma Eid and Al Jazira defender Ahmed Al Ali were all shown yellow cards.
The complexion of the match changed just after the hour mark. Al Bataeh, which had been given a 51.7 percent probability to win by Interstat’s ELO rating system, found its equalizer. Substitute Simon Banza rose to meet a cross and powered a header into the net in the 61st minute, tying the game at 1-1. The assist was credited to Gʻaniyev, who finished the night with a goal and an assist for Al Jazira.
The physicality continued as the teams searched for a winner. Al Jazira substitute Richard Akonnor received a yellow card in the 66th minute. In stoppage time, Al Jazira defender Diney and forward Juninho were both booked.
Despite the late pushes, neither side could break the deadlock. The final whistle confirmed a share of the points, a result that saw Al Bataeh slightly outperform its goal-scoring projection while Al Jazira fell short of its expected victory.
The opening-day draw provides a foundation for both clubs as they move forward in the Arabian Gulf League season.
