Irapuato vs Cancun

IRAPUATO, Mexico (March 21, 2026) (Interstat) — In a dramatic conclusion that defied statistical projections, Irapuato and Cancun played to a 2-2 draw in a Liga de Expansión MX match Saturday at Estadio Sergio León Chávez.

The match, the season opener for both clubs, saw a flurry of second-half goals and a late red card that set the stage for a stunning equalizer deep into stoppage time. The result left each team with an identical record of 0 wins, 0 losses and 1 draw to start the campaign across all competitions.

The game unfolded in stark contrast to pre-match forecasts. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 1-1 final score, while its ELO rating system gave Irapuato a 71.80 percent probability of securing a victory on home soil. Instead, the teams shared the points after a back-and-forth contest.

After a scoreless first half, the match ignited shortly after the restart. Cancun substitute Christopher Trejo, who entered the game in the 32nd minute, broke the deadlock in the 44th minute with a well-taken finish. The visitors’ lead was short-lived, however, as Irapuato forward Styven Vásquez responded just nine minutes later, in the 53rd minute, leveling the score with a goal of his own.

Irapuato then seized momentum and took the lead in the 62nd minute through a key performance from forward Jose Salazar, who found the net to put the home side ahead 2-1. Salazar’s goal appeared it might be the winner as the match entered its tense final stages.

The contest’s complexion shifted decisively in the 84th minute when Irapuato’s Even Padilla was shown a straight red card, forcing his team to play a man down for the remainder of regulation and stoppage time. Cancun pressed for an advantage, and the match grew increasingly fractious. Yellow cards were issued to Cancun’s Santiago Montiel in first-half stoppage time, and to Irapuato’s Elbis in the 87th minute and Julio Doldán in the 91st minute as tensions rose.

With the eight minutes of added time nearly elapsed, Cancun capitalized on its numerical advantage. In the 98th minute, Francisco Melendre scored a dramatic late equalizer, silencing the home crowd and securing a valuable road point for his team. The assist on the crucial goal was credited to Cancun substitute Santiago Montiel, whose contribution proved vital.

The draw provided a share of the points for each club in their first outing of the Liga de Expansión MX season. Irapuato will rue the late collapse after leading at home, while Cancun will take heart from a resilient performance that saw them fight back twice, ultimately snatching a point from a difficult road fixture in the closing seconds.
