Pachuca Upsets Tigres UANL With Late Goal in Liga MX Season Opener

SAN NICOLÁS DE LOS GARZA, Mexico (Interstat) — Pachuca opened its Liga MX season with a 2-1 upset victory over Tigres UANL on Friday at Estadio Universitario de Nuevo León.

Ozziel Herrera gave the visiting Tuzos the lead in the 39th minute. Tigres, heavily favored pregame, equalized in the 79th when substitute Salomón Rondón scored. Pachuca secured the win just nine minutes later as another substitute, Kenedy, netted the decisive goal in the 88th.

The match turned in the 50th minute when Tigres’ Joaquim was shown a red card. Pachuca defender Vladimir Loroña and forward Diego Lainez received first-half yellow cards. The result defied statistical projections that heavily favored the home side.
