Westerlo vs Sint-Truiden

WESTERLO, Belgium (Interstat) — Sint-Truiden delivered a commanding and clinical away performance, routing Westerlo 4-0 on Friday afternoon in a Belgian First Division A match at Het Kuipje. The comprehensive victory served as emphatic revenge for a 3-0 defeat suffered in the reverse fixture earlier this season.

The visitors established dominance early and never relented. Rihito Yamamoto opened the scoring in the 10th minute, setting the tone for a first-half onslaught. Abdoulaye Sissako doubled the advantage in the 31st minute, and Yamamoto secured his brace just before halftime, striking in the 42nd minute to give Sint-Truiden a decisive 3-0 lead at the break.

Westerlo, which entered the match as a significant favorite according to pregame projections, offered little response. The home side’s frustrations grew in the second half as the match became increasingly disjointed. Sint-Truiden defender Dago Ourega, who had assisted on Sissako’s goal, received a yellow card in the 50th minute and was later sent off with a red card in the 76th minute.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Sint-Truiden capped the afternoon with a fourth goal. Substitute Keisuke Gotō, who had just entered the match, found the net in the 82nd minute, assisted by midfielder Doğucan Haspolat. Haspolat had also been booked earlier, receiving a yellow card in the 66th minute.

The result starkly contradicted the pregame analytics. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 2-1 victory for Westerlo, and its ELO rating system gave the hosts a 62.1 percent probability of winning. Instead, Sint-Truiden executed a flawless game plan to secure three points.

The victory solidifies Sint-Truiden’s strong standing in the league campaign, improving its First Division A record to 14 wins, five losses and three draws. The club’s form across all competitions is identical. The Canaries have now won seven of their last nine league matches, a run of form that began after their loss to Westerlo in September.

For Westerlo, the defeat is a significant setback, halting momentum from a 1-0 win over Zultearegem the previous weekend. Their league record falls to seven wins, 10 losses and three draws, with their overall record across all competitions dipping to eight wins, 13 losses and four draws. The team’s inability to generate offense, despite the statistical favoritism, will be a primary concern.

Sint-Truiden’s next match is on the road against Dender on Feb. 21. Westerlo will look to regroup quickly, traveling to face Kampong Speu Province on Feb. 15.
